As these exclusive spy shots seem to prove, BMW is apparently very scared about the competition to their current M5 coming from Audi's all-new RS6 which was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Closer examination of the photos reveals additional mesh-covered air-intakes in the front bumper to satisfy the upgraded V10-engine under the bonnet. Rumours suggest it is going to be pushed to no less than 425kW to match that of the RS6. The current M5 delivers 373kW of power. The photographer who delivered the spy-shots reports about a much more aggressive and somewhat lower sound and is sure to have heard the car was equipped with the new DSG transmission rather than the SMG used for M5s so far. The upgrade M5 will probably be launched at next year's Geneva Motor Show. - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

Re: BMW to boost M5 - power upgrade can't say I'm not a bit dissapointed with this news. I was always proud of the M5 having the same poweroutput during it's lifetime in stead of joining the crazy powerbattle done during the lifecycle of AMG or RS vehicles.

Re: BMW to boost M5 - power upgrade Bah. The M5 has enough power as it is, no need for a power upgrade.

Re: BMW to boost M5 - power upgrade I believe the E34 M5 got an engine upgrade during it's life time - so it does have past precedence.

Re: BMW to boost M5 - power upgrade I find it hard to believe that they would try to match RS6's power figures. They already said M will concetrate on weight reduction instead of power increase in the future. So maybe a smaller update with more extensive use of light-weight materials is possible. Replacing the SMG III with the M DCT would make it even more attractive for many potential customers.

Re: BMW to boost M5 - power upgrade That's exactly the idea I was going to suggest. Instead of actually upgrading the M5, they might just offer an extra package like they did with the E46 M3. I agree with many of you that the M5 doesn't need the extra power, it's got more than enough. One question though, if they decide to offer more power, will the engine displacement remain the same, or will it become a 5.5L engine producing ~550-580hp?
