Having said that, the Tiptronic Automatic transmission that Porsche has been using for the 997 is a fine piece of machinery when you leave it in automatic mode. Very fast shifts, active downshifting when braking, holding a gear when cornering hard to prevent unwanted shifting through a corner......
Sound familiar to any other performance tuned automatic transmission out there? Here's a hint: what other manufacturer makes a 5 speed automatic gearbox capable of handling high torque values like the 911 Turbo would create?......
You guessed it: Mercedes AMG Speedshift automatic transmission. It is not talked about a lot, but Mercedes AMG provides the 5 speed automatic transmissions for the 996 and 997, with the 997 getting the newer version from the C55/E55/SL55. | I always thought Porsches used ZF transmissions. |
