  | Road and Track - 2008 BMW 135i Coupe (short)         The 135 has the potential to be a big hit. The 2008 BMW 1 Series will be here in March, and we'll get two: a 135i and a 128i. Essentially a scaled-down 3 Series as the mechanicals are basically the same, these cars' chassis are shorter and roughly 200 lb. lighter. The 135i is reminiscent of the fabulous 2002 BMWs of the 1970s, the most famous of which were the turbo-powered cars and the tii. At the Tokyo auto show, a concept 135tii received much attention. The 135 has the potential to be a big hit. Pricing hasn't been announced, but if it's priced far enough below the 3 Series, it will likely do very well. A day of driving the car, on both road and track, gave me a good impression of the 135i as being a spry 3 Series, although we'll have to wait for the M variant for a truly sporting ride. The base 135i is fast and fun, but it has a penchant for understeer. Surely that's curable with some slight suspension tuning, but for the real enthusiasts there may be some disappointment.
